6 March 2012: The UK High Court has ruled that the search giant Google wasn’t responsible for defamatory material posted on its blogging site. In his ruling Justice Eady stated that, based on the evidence, Google’s role as a platform provider was purely a passive one, therefore it was not liable at common law as a publisher. Further, in terms of the Defamation Act 1996, the judge concluded that Google is not a publisher.
